Biography of Martha Carrier, Accused Witch

Biography of Martha Carrier, Accused Witch Martha Carrier (born Martha Allen; died August 19, 1692) was one of 19 people accused of witchcraft who were hanged during the 17th century Salem witch trials. Another person died of torture, and four died in prison, although the trials lasted only from spring to September of 1692. The trials began when a group of girls in Salem Village (now Danvers), Massachusetts, claimed to be possessed by the devil and accused several local women of being witches. As hysteria spread throughout colonial Massachusetts, a special court was convened in Salem to hear the cases. Fast Facts: Martha Carrier Known For: Conviction and execution as a witchBorn: Date unknown in Andover, MassachusettsDied: Aug. 19, 1692 in Salem, MassachusettsSpouse: Thomas CarrierChildren: Andrew Carrier, Richard Carrier, Sarah Carrier, Thomas Carrier Jr., possibly others Early Life Carrier was born in Andover, Massachusetts, to parents who were among the original settlers there. She married Thomas Carrier, a Welsh indentured servant, in 1674, after giving birth to their first child, a scandal that wasnt forgotten. They had several children- sources give numbers ranging from four to eight- and lived for a time in Billerica, Massachusetts, moving back to Andover to live with her mother after her fathers death in 1690. The Carriers were accused of bringing smallpox to Andover; two of their children had died of the disease in Billerica. That Carriers husband and two other children were ill with smallpox and survived was considered suspect- especially because Carriers two brothers had died of the disease, which put her in line to inherit her fathers property. She was known as a strong-minded, sharp-tongued woman, and she argued with her neighbors when she suspected them of trying to cheat her and her husband. Witch Trials Belief in the supernatural- specifically, in the devil’s ability to give humans the power to harm others through witchcraft in return for their loyalty to him- had emerged in Europe as early as the 14th century and was widespread in colonial New England. Coupled with the smallpox epidemic, the aftermath of a British-French war in the colonies, fears of attacks from nearby Native American tribes, and a rivalry between rural Salem Village and the more affluent Salem Town (now Salem), the witch hysteria had created suspicions among neighbors and a fear of outsiders. Salem Village and Salem Town were near Andover. The first convicted witch, Bridget Bishop, was hanged that June. Carrier was arrested on May 28, along with her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Roger Toothaker, their daughter Margaret (born 1683), and several others. They all were charged with witchcraft. Carrier, the first Andover resident caught up in the trials, was accused by the four Salem girls, as they were called, one of whom worked for a competitor of Toothaker. Beginning the previous January, two young Salem Village girls had begun having fits that included violent contortions and uncontrolled screaming. A study published in Science magazine in 1976 said the fungus ergot, found in rye, wheat, and other cereals, can cause delusions, vomiting, and muscle spasms, and rye had become the staple crop in Salem Village due to problems with cultivating wheat. But a local doctor diagnosed bewitchment. Other young local girls soon began to exhibit symptoms similar to those of the Salem Village children. On May 31, Judges John Hathorne, Jonathan Corwin, and Bartholomew Gedney examined Carrier, John Alden, Wilmott Redd, Elizabeth How, and Phillip English. Carrier maintained her innocence, though the accusing girls- Susannah Sheldon, Mary Walcott, Elizabeth Hubbard, and Ann Putnam- demonstrated their supposed afflictions caused by Carriers powers. Other neighbors and relatives testified about curses. She pleaded not guilty and accused the girls of lying. Carriers youngest children were coerced into testifying against their mother, and her sons Andrew (18) and Richard (15) were also accused, as was her daughter Sarah (7). Sarah confessed first, after which her son Thomas Jr. did as well. Then, under torture (their necks tied to their heels), Andrew and Richard also confessed, all implicating their mother. In July, Ann Foster, another woman accused in the trials, also implicated Martha Carrier, a pattern of the accused naming other people that was repeated again and again. Found Guilty On August 2, the court heard testimony against Carrier, George Jacobs Sr., George Burroughs, John Willard, and John and Elizabeth Proctor. On August 5, a trial jury found all six guilty of witchcraft and sentenced them to hang. Carrier was 33 years old when she was hanged on Salems Gallows Hill on August 19, 1692, with Jacobs, Burroughs, Willard, and John Proctor. Elizabeth Proctor was spared and later freed. Carrier shouted her innocence from the scaffold, refusing to confess to a falsehood so filthy even though it would have helped her avoid hanging. Cotton Mather, a Puritan minister and author at the center of the witch trials, was an observer at the hanging, and in his diary he noted Carrier as a rampant hag and possible Queen of Hell. Historians have theorized that Carrier was victimized because of a fight between two local ministers over disputed property or because of the selective smallpox effects in her family and community. Most agree, however, that her reputation as a disagreeable member of the community could have contributed. Legacy In addition to those who died, about 150 men, women, and children were accused. But by September 1692, the hysteria had begun to abate. Public opinion turned against the trials. The Massachusetts General Court eventually annulled verdicts against the accused witches and granted indemnities to their families. In 1711, Carriers family received 7 pounds and 6 shillings as recompense for her conviction. But bitterness lingered inside and outside the communities. The vivid and painful legacy of the Salem witch trials has endured for centuries as a horrific example of false witness. Noted playwright Arthur Miller dramatized the events of 1692 in his 1953 Tony Award-winning play â€Å"The Crucible,† using the trials as an allegory for the anti-Communist â€Å"witch hunts† led by Sen.  Joseph McCarthy  in the 1950s. Miller himself was caught up in McCarthys net, likely because of his play. Sources Salem Witch Trials Timeline. ThoughtCo.The Salem Witch Trials Victims: Who Were They? The Law of Comparative Advantage as a Basis for Understanding Essay

The Law of Comparative Advantage as a Basis for Understanding International Trade - Essay Example In addition, comparative advantage as a basis for understanding international trade is limited by the distance between the trading partners thereby increasing the transaction cost. Introduction Since the law of comparative advantage was introduced by David Ricardo in 1817, it has been used as a basis for understanding international trade. The law explained that countries should concentrate in producing what they best and let others do what they do best. The law is based on the premises that different countries have varying endowment and therefore those countries less endowed on production of a certain good should buy from more endowed countries thereby leading to more gains in trade. Ricardo demonstrated this law by giving the example of cloth and wine production between Portugal and England. Portugal is highly endowed in the production of the two and therefore Portugal would have to export the two. On the other hand, England would have to import the two goods thereby failing to gain from trade. Given that comparative advantage is based on relative operation costs, doing some things is comparatively more beneficial than others ("Comparative advantage: Doing what you do best", 2011, p. 32). ... 82). Although comparative remains a critical determinant of trade, OECD countries are more similar economically and therefore trade based on comparative advantage may not find application in current international trade ("Comparative advantage: Doing what you do best", 2011, p. 32). Despite the economic similarities among OECD countries, there are some differences which can drive trade based on comparative advantage. Moreover, there are remarkable differences between OECD countries and non-OECD countries and between non-OECD. Consequently, applicability of the comparative advantage could be more pronounced in North to South trade and South-South trade rather than it is for the North to North trade ("Comparative advantage: Doing what you do best", 2011, p. 32). In addition to the only one factor of production proposed by Ricardo, productive of the country is influenced by physical capital, level of education and availability of credit. Heckscher-Ohlin contradicts the argument of Ricard o and argues that varied comparative advantage among countries emerges due to differences in the abundance of factors and the intensity with which the goods rely on those factors (Morrow, 2010, p. 139). This paper seeks to analyze seeks to analyze the application of Ricardo’s and Heckscher-Ohlin law of comparative advantage to influence international trade and assess the extent to which international trade is affected by comparative advantage. International trade and comparative advantage based on Ricardo’s and Heckscher-Ohlin trade theories Production levels world over demonstrate heterogeneity and specialization (Kamery, 2004, p. 115). For instance, US produces over 35 percent of total

Make up one Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Make up one - Essay Example As mentioned in the review, delay in time affects â€Å"jury’s decision† which prolongs a victim’s agony. A recent example of this is illustrated in the recent news report by New Haven Register : â€Å"A backlog at the state forensic laboratory is contributing to a delay in the case against a 33-year-old West Haven man accused of raping and killing a 7-year-old girl, a judge said Thursday†( Tinley, 2010) The second recommendation that should be done is to simply establish the right procedure for forensic requests. The first-come first-serve basis must be observed along with a system that thoroughly evaluates the importance of a request. This recommendation shows that the crime lab has difficulty in providing timely forensic results which deters catching criminals. â€Å"All labs have to be accredited, which costs money. But ask police and prosecutors and they will tell you it is the best expenditure that they ever made. Nobody hates bad lab work more than a prosecutor does, thats how cases get lost. They hate it. It is another win-win proposition for the criminal justice system†(Lyons & Burton, 2001, p. 10) A serial killer may be able to escape and continue to commit crime in other states as a result of this delay. Again, implementation of this depends on the managers of the crime laboratory. They may not be wanting in forensic skills, however they need to be trained about management so they can evaluate, and assess their current policies. The third recommendation that must be implemented the least is developing a system of notification for cross-over requests. Again, the recommendation I chose is all about establishing a system which can be delivered by the Technical Assistance Section. It is ironic that while victims are suffering and perpetrators are on the loose, evidence is ready but no one is fully aware of that. Its implementation depends on how the management of the

Industrial Revolution Essay Example for Free

Industrial Revolution Essay While the Industrial Revolution had both positive and negative effects on society and the economy, the positive effects outweighed the negative. The Industrial Revolution was absolutely beneficial to the progress of the world from the 1800s all the way to present day. Sacrifices were made which allowed technological advancements during the Industrial Revolution, which in turn, created happiness, life opportunities, and an over-all, definite improvement of life. Even though at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, many hardships had to be overcome, causing great grief to most of the population. Faith was lost, patience was tried, and a blanket of oppression covered the people of Europe. When new inventions rose to aid the producing and mass-producing of goods that supplied the people of Europe, nearly everyone was forced to begin a new career within a factory. These are just some of the hardships that many loyal, hardworking citizens were faced with. The Industrial Revolution had a more positive effect on Western society in the 19th century. Although child labor during the 1820s was quite hard on most of the children working and also proved to be quite dangerous, it still brought about the creation of child labor laws and also the funding of schools. As factories began to develop, the organization within them also stepped up. There was an increase in production and assembly lines took place creating a more orderly environment to be working in. Also, many inventions started to develop and be discovered, creating an easier and more accurate way of doing things, not just in factories, but also in the home. Lastly, railroads were a big part of the Industrial Revolution in that they created a faster and cheaper way to transport goods and materials from one place to another. The Industrial Revolution had many hardships, but also it had point were it created happiness for many people. Now you know why I believe that the positive effects outweighed the negative effects.

The Go-Getter :: essays research papers

The Go-Getter is a story about one man’s drive and persistence. William E. Peck is his name and he is an ex-soldier who was injured in battle. Bill lost one of his arms and had one of his legs shortened because of a gunshot wound. But the story begins as the Ricks & Logging Company is looking for a man who can take over managerial responsibilities in their Shanghai office. The two previous managers have had alcohol problems and have not lived up to their responsibilities. So the company is looking for a replacement. First off, Cappy Ricks and Mr. Skinner are set on a Mr. Andrews taking the job in Shanghai. But in walks this gimpy one-armed man into Mr. Ricks’ office and wow’s him with his powerful ability to sell himself, Bill Peck. Bill had met with several other people in the company and they did not give him a chance. But he wouldn’t quit and went straight to the top and achieved what he was looking for, and got his chance. Early in Bill’s job, he does surprisingly well. The top dogs at the company think that Bill just may be the man to take over the Shanghai office instead of Mr. Andrews. But he would have to pass one test. Cappy sends Bill out to pick up a blue vase and deliver it back to Cappy by a certain time and place. What Bill doesn’t know is that Cappy sets obstacles to make the task almost impossible. Bill succeeds in this mission to the surprise of Cappy. Bill is only the second person out of fifteen to actually complete the mission. Bill is ultimately offered the job to take over the Shanghai office. At my internship, my supervisor in working the cameras at WICU has not exemplified the same managerial style and qualities as Cappy Ricks. He’s just not that mean, in the sense of sending me out on a bogus story or on a wild goose chase. But he does have confidence in me to shoot what I think is appropriate. His confidence in me does work, because if he would always shoot a story or scene, then how could I learn. I’m not really sure if I’m beneficial to the station because I am only an intern. But there is a little over a month left, so maybe in time I’ll be beneficial to the station.

PERSONAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT AND TEAM WORK ANALYSIS

Effective organisational public presentation is an facet that every organisation would wish to accomplish but how those organisations can bring forth a high public presentation. Teamwork must be one of the replies. This assignment provides some information and points out that why squad work is of import more than group work, and besides demonstrates the manner which squad members interact in order to do their work procedure flow swimmingly. Bing a good squad member, accomplishments demand is considered because personal accomplishments can be utile in footings of develop a squad ‘s public presentation. Due to this consideration, this is my good opportunity to better my accomplishments by placing some accomplishments which need to be improved. Making the personal development program and making a accomplishments audit are tools which can assist me to accomplish my end. As I am presently in the last term before making my thesis of the MBA class this assignment will demo what I have developed so far and demo how much I achieve my ends. This assignment is divided into three undertakings as follows: 1. Describe the different between squad and group and Identify and critically reflect on the relationship between the aims of important operational undertaking and my single function and aims. Furthermore, this undertaking will show and measure how I interacted with my co-workers and demo my sentiment in what I would make if I look back on the important undertaking and why I would make that. 2. This portion shows how I have developed my accomplishments over the class through my personal portfolio 3. This portion shows the contemplation on the procedure of my accomplishments development1. Working with a figure of co-workers on a given undertaking or important operational undertaking1.1 The differences between squad and groupThe word group and squad normally are used interchangeably, but there are really a figure of differences between a squad and a group depends on which portion you have considered. Longman dictionary defined both words base on the word significance: â€Å" group defined as several people or things that are all together in the same topographic point † and â€Å" squad defined as a group of people who have been chosen to work together to make a peculiar occupation † . Besides you can see a difference between group and squad by concentrating on a relationship among members in group or squad. Normally, members in a squad are close to each other and their single undertakings are related to one another. Significantly, squad donates more than one singl e involve in goal-oriented joint action while group refer to informal bunch of more than one person ( Wilson A. 1998 ) and it goes beyond single achievements. ( Ruth & A ; Herman G.1940 ) . In a group, members they are grouped together for administrative intent merely, some members might non cognize each other earlier but working as a squad, they work together because they got a squad end which is best complete with manual support and the relationship across persons is obvious. ( RDI enchiridion, 2009 ) The of import factor which differentiates squad from group is the interdependent among the squad member in executing the squad undertaking ( Saiyadain M.S, 2003 ) The squad members are diverse in footings of assorted positions, personalities, position and function.1.2 Significant operational undertakingDuring my old occupation, I was working in the cordial reception sector, ( In the little size hotel sector ) , as a general helper in a hotel ‘s eating house. On my operational u ndertaking within the hotel ‘s eating house, all staff were gathered to make our ain single undertaking. As the account about squad and group above, I think working with my co-workers on the important operational undertaking is near to a squad construct. Harmonizing to the squad construct, goal-oriented joint action is a cardinal point which indicates that we were working every bit squad because we had a end which we wanted to accomplish by working together because our single undertakings are linked. Significantly, my squad end was to do certain that we satisfy client demands and outlooks with a high quality of service. In my squad, there were 13 staff who had a duty concern to a whole procedure of service bringing ( e.g director, kitchen staff, waiting staff, ) As I mention above, holding the same end is the key which drawing all squad members together because all undertakings in the whole work procedure are linked. In order to accomplish the end, we needed to travel towards the same way because teamwork is a joint action of a group member and each squad members have to lend their accomplishments and sentiment toward the squad end. Therefore, our squad member, foremost, had to be cognizant and clear about the ends and understand single functions and undertakings. My chief function was covering with clients and do certain that they got the best service and other squad members besides got their peculiar undertaking but every undertakings were linked to one another. Working as squad, leading accomplishments is really of import. Leadership can be defined as the procedure of act uponing and persuade others to understand and hold about what needs to be done and how to make it. ( Gary Yukl, 2006 ) In the squad we needed person who can actuate and take squad members in to the right way without any fright of any jobs. Besides, working as squad, we had to interact among members all the clip to do our procedure flow swimmingly in the right way.1.3 Interaction amon g squad membersSignificantly, Interacting among team members is the key facet which can impact to a whole public presentation because it helps the squad to accomplish the end efficaciously. Harmonizing to Longman lexicon, Interaction is defined as a sort of action which two or more objects can impact to each other. The part from members such as interchanging sentiment, thought or cognition can assist the squad execute more effectual. ( Beyerlein M. et Al, . 2000 ) By and large, every squad member develop the ways of interacting among members over the clip, particularly interpersonal communicating among members because the effectivity of a whole public presentation ever depends on how good team members interact to one another. Often, independent squads are presented the best pattern for increased public presentation ( Hellenthal A. and Molleman E. 2008 ) because working as squad, there exists no individual in order to convey the best solution. The interaction such as how a squad make s determinations, assigns work, and holds members accountable determines squad success, these are really of import to see in any squad work. Harmonizing to my work experience, all of the squad members had to unclutter in head and understand the squad ‘s end, otherwise we might hold been gone in a different way. In our daily occupation, we were assigned a undertaking by a squad leader. Basically, squad leader was non the same member all the clip, it depends on the state of affairs. And in any determination devising, there was ever interaction among team members because in any decision-making everyone had to keep the duty for the determination which was eventually made because we were working as squad. All squad members reserved a right to hold or differ and demo our sentiment straight towards our leader. Furthermore, because of our undertakings were linked and would hold been effected to one another, hence staff meeting which was hold every two hebdomad in order to give a oppor tunity for staff to advise our public presentations and tried to happen a solution for any peculiar jobs.1.4 Significant operational undertaking and the existent state of affairs in my work topographic pointHarmonizing to the theory of communicating, ( RDI manus book, 2009 ) effectual communicating within any organisation is an facet that organisations have to concern. Bad communicating will necessarily take to loss of income or worse. Basically, there are three basic types of communications ; bipartisan communicating is the one which is extremely effectual because both transmitter and receiving system can give their feedback straight. Compare with my work experience, my squad end was run intoing the client outlook by presenting a good service. In daily undertaking, good communicating accomplishments would be really utile for working every bit squad because in the whole procedure of working, we had to pass on with the squad members all the clip to do certain that we reached all clie nts ‘ outlook in footings of service quality. Generally, squad members were assigned a undertaking and turn to a day-to-day end by a leader every forenoon and the leader besides allowed us to show our thought which might be utile for the squad if there was a particular event such as private party. During any twenty-four hours working, the most hard state of affairs was, when there was a particular order and waiting staff had to reassign that order to a chef. We had to do certain that we meet the client ‘s outlook. Apart from the daily undertaking, every two hebdomads, there was a meeting which made for all squad members to discourse a whole public presentation in the past two hebdomads. Every squad member would hold got all information which was utile for bettering the squad public presentation such as feedbacks from clients which were collected straight from clients. We besides got a opportunity to show our point of position and portion our thoughts and happen the count ries of understanding as the footing for coaction. Personally, I think the manner that the operational undertaking was managed was sensible and efficient, because good communicating among team member was really of import for working as a squad. If I could pull off this undertaking, I would still keep this good point about bipartisan communicating but I would believe more about staff committedness issue because all staff members were a portion of the success and we should return some benefits back to staff for their difficult work by appealing to them in footings of wages bundle such as salary, fillip, position and acknowledgment. If we could win the staff committedness, staff would be happy to work towards the operational undertaking and we would acquire the best public presentation from them.2. Personal PortfolioPersonal Development Plan is a tool which contains actions or aspirations oriented towards any of the undermentioned purposes and it should be seen as a changeless procedur e affecting sweetening and development of abilities, accomplishments and cognition ( RDI enchiridion, 2009 ) . Apparently, accomplishments audit is of import for everyone who would wish to put up PDP. Skills audit is a tool which is designed to assist you to place your strengths, failings and countries for development within assorted accomplishments countries. ( RDI enchiridion, 2009 ) Before I set up my PDP, I did a accomplishments audit and four of of import accomplishments were chosen to be improved as the tabular array below.Skills AuditKnowledge and accomplishments which I consider to be of import for future occupation Ability Rating ( 1-5 ) 1.Leadership accomplishments 2 2. Prioritizing accomplishment 4 3.Communication accomplishments 3 4. Planning accomplishment 3 5. IT skills 2 Note: see appendices for the original accomplishments audit Harmonizing to the accomplishments audit above, I identified my accomplishments which needed to be improved and take some activities to back up me to better my accomplishments. There are four accomplishments which I think they will be utile for my future calling. Those accomplishments are:1. Leadership accomplishmentFrom my accomplishments audit above I gave myself in a low evaluation and I thought I needed to better this accomplishment because this accomplishment is really of import accomplishment for a director. In the workplace director should hold an ability to actuate a squad member to work toward a common end and acquire the occupation done in order to do the over public presentation more effectual and successful. For bettering this accomplishment, I set some activities such as take parting in any group undertaking ( schoolroom ) , reading a book â€Å" Leadership accomplishments for directors † . During six months for bettering leading accomplishment, I have been derivi ng a batch of cognition and I got many opportunity to pattern this accomplishment. Significantly, I have leant how to carry group members to hold with my thought and besides larn how to be good leader in the group when we were assign the group undertaking such as squad ‘s treatments and presentations during category assignments. I besides learn from reading books which contain leading articles. These books helped me to understand the differences between director and leader ; how the leader is so of import to really work undertaking and it besides teaches me how to be a good leader.2. Prioritizing accomplishmentPrioritizing accomplishments is of import for director because good director is a individual who manages to be after the agenda and divide clip every bit between undertakings can be an plus for the organisation. This accomplishment fundamentally was the accomplishment which I gave myself a highest evaluation among all accomplishments. In the past six months, I improve th is accomplishment a batch particularly during the MBA class. By and large, there were many assignments which had to be submitted on clip, hence, this accomplishment is really utile for me because I could prioritise all my plants and working on the most of import at each minute and could subject all my assignment on clip.3. Communication accomplishmentsCommunication accomplishments are really of import for working as a squad. Working as a squad, Bad communicating will necessarily take to loss of income or worse. My communicating accomplishments at the beginning of the class were non good plenty. Language was my barrier because English is non my first linguistic communication. Therefore, take parting in any group undertaking ( schoolroom ) was the activity which utile for bettering these accomplishments. During my class, I got many opportunity to better my communicating accomplishments such as treatment category, work as a group and communicate to other group members. Furthermore, I h ave learnt a batch signifier the books about communicating. In order to go a more effectual communicator, I have learnt many different communicating ‘s channels such as memos – emails – meetings – teleconferencing – blink of an eye messaging4. Planning accomplishmentPlaning accomplishment is one of those accomplishments which allows a director to expect such issues and be prepared should they originate. My action program for bettering this accomplishment were reading and researching articles or books which are related to an assignment. Over the past six months, I read a batch of books which were utile to my assignment such as the book about Human Resource Management, Managing Change, Marketing, Finance and operational direction. Apart from reading, I did pattern some exercisings before the 24 hours appraisal in Finance direction.5. Information engineering ( IT ) SkillsNot surprisingly, IT skills are really of import in most parts of every workplace because IT accomplishments are still in demand and IT may be the most of import factor for long-run calling success. From my accomplishment audit above, I gave myself low evaluation because I got merely basic ability about IT. Therefore, I planned to better these accomplishments by making a batch of practising in some computing machine applications which I already got the basic cognition approximately such as Microsoft Excel, internet application. Furthermore, I have leant more about some computing machine applications which I had ne'er used earlier such as Autofill with Formulae and maps. From the activities above which were usage to assist myself to better my accomplishments in many countries. After my program reached the mark day of the month which was on April 2010, I will reexamine the accomplishments which were developed over the period of clip by this following tabular array: This tabular array below shows how I have developed my accomplishments so far during my class period. 20th October 2009 -20th January 2010 Skills 1 2 3 4 5 Leadership accomplishments*Prioritizing accomplishments*Communication accomplishments*Planing accomplishments*IT Skills*21th January 2010 – 21 April 2010 Skills 1 2 3 4 5 Leadership accomplishments*Prioritizing accomplishments*Communication accomplishments*Planing accomplishments*IT Skills*Note: 1 = need to be improved with a batch of attempt 2 = can be sensible but still necessitate betterment 3 = need more practicing and necessitate more clip to derive some experiences 4 = moderately confident but need more practicing 5 = achieve the end From the tabular array above which it shows how much my accomplishments have developed over six months. Basically, I divided my self- appraisal into two periods ( three months in each period ) . Harmonizing to the first period of my self-assessment, I realized that all of those accomplishments were developed bit by bit. It was because I had to set myself into new environment such as educational system and linguistic communication which different from my state. 1. Leadership skills- in the first period, I rated myself merely 3 because I think I need more practicing and necessitate more clip to derive some experiences and after six months was over I rated myself 4 which is moderately confident but need more practicing. Frankly, I think to be a good leader with a batch of confident, I need to maintain practicing and tilting from errors in the yesteryear. 2. Prioritizing skills- Before I started to better this accomplishment, I rated myself rather high ( 4 ) but after the first period was over, I still thought that my prioritizing accomplishment did non better much because I had to set myself to the new educational system. When the self-assessment was over, I think this accomplishment was developed successfully. 3. Communication Skills- These accomplishments was hard to be improved for me sing to a linguistic communication barrier. For the first period, hence, I needed to pattern really hard in both English accomplishments and communicating accomplishments because both are linked. After the whole period was over, I think my communicating accomplishments were developed moderately and I would wish to pattern and larn more to draw these accomplishments to be my strength. 4. Planing accomplishments – Although, this accomplishment is rather simple and easy to win but being in MBA cause, be aftering accomplishments was turned to be a spot hard for me. Nevertheless, maintaining myself on path and ever concentrating on the end of my survey, these made me improved this skill rapidly. Therefore, I think this accomplishment was developed successfully. 5. IT skills – Frankly speech production, I think these accomplishments are the most hard to be improve because there are many computing machine applications which take clip to be understood. For the first period, I did non better much on these accomplishments because it was hard to larn how to utilize some computing machine application by myself but within the 2nd period, I got a opportunity to pattern this accomplishment more frequently with my schoolmate due to the fiscal direction faculty. After six months were over, I think that even though I have improved this accomplishment but I need more practicing and necessitate more clip to derive some experiences. Harmonizing to my self- appraisal for all of the accomplishments above, I think I have developed those accomplishments moderately and successfully and those demand to be practiced continuously in order to do them to be my strength and be utile for my hereafter calling3. First, leading accomplishments are the chief accomplishments which I need to develop. Leadership is defined as the procedure of act uponing and persuade others to understand and hold about what needs to be done and how to make it. ( Gary Yukl, 2006 ) and it is about carrying people to lend to doing something extraordinary happen ( Kuozen J. et al. , 2007 ) . Leadership accomplishments are really of import for any teamwork because making a squad end needs person who can take and carry squad members through the right manner whether it is hard or non. Equally far as I am cognizant, my leading accomplishments have been bettering because these accomplishments need clip to pattern. Apparently, group work in the category helps me a batch by constructing my assurance and I am besides larning organize the many books about leading such as â€Å" Leadership accomplishments for directors † which help me to understand more about why leading accomplishments are of import for director occupa tion and how I can go a good leader. Second, Prioritizing accomplishment, personally I thought this accomplishment was really easy to be developed but in fact being in MBA class made me realized that there were many obstructions which prevented myself to accomplish my end such as being in a different educational system and linguistic communication barriers. These obstructions made some of my work delayed but unluckily, I am still on the path and be able to better this accomplishment successfully. Third, Communication accomplishments, good communicate among team members is a portion of bring forthing an effectual squad public presentation. As I have learnt so far during my category period, bipartisan communicating is seemingly more effectual in pattern because treatment in a schoolroom needs everyone in the category to be participated by sharing our thoughts and I decidedly got a opportunity to portion my sentiment and larn how to be a good hearer at the same clip. And I ever use some techniques form the book, â€Å" Step ladders to success for the professional † which help me to execute in my category more expeditiously because difference of thoughts or sentiment might take us to group ‘s struggle and it happened to me many times but these experiences help me to larn how to manage the job. Fourthly, be aftering accomplishments, harmonizing to the fact that I have to subject all of my assignments on clip, hence, be aftering such as what I had to make, which book I had to read etcaˆÂ ¦these assist me to subject all of my assignments on clip and I got a sensible Markss for all of them. This accomplishment can use to any activities which need to be done in a certain clip. Last, IT skills which are of import for a director occupation in footings of utilizing it to bring forth organisational studies. Equally far as I am concern, the spreadsheet ( Excel package ) is really of import computing machine application which simulates a paper, accounting worksheet. Harmonizing to the complication of the plan, it has been taking me long clip to larn and understand how it works, but practising can assist me to utilize this plan more effectual in the hereafter.DecisionIn any countries of any concern, individual who has a possible accomplishment is ever required. Therefore, accomplishments development is really of import for any individual who would wish to acquire a good occupation. By and large, non merely for a occupation searcher but it is for person who needs to better his/her accomplishments in order to execute his/her undertaking more effectual. Personally, this personal accomplishments development helps me to place my ability and accomplishments which I nee d to better and actuate myself to accomplish my end by puting an action program. Although, I have non achieved all my programs at this minute but I believe that if I keep follow my action program, I will decidedly make my end in the hereafter.AppendixsPersonal Development PlanMy GoalWhich skills I need to better?Actions RequiredWho or What Can Help Me?Target Date for ActionTo derive diversified concern cognition and expertness in order to be a possible director in the hereafter by Bettering Some accomplishments which are related to my end 1. Mental health and illness

The nature of `mental health` and `mental illness` has been described as `contested`. Who are the contestants and what is the contest about? The Mental Illness has always been considered as a contested issue, because this is the only suffering of unfortunate human beings, which is being highly misunderstood. There are different types of mental illnesses that are suffered by human beings, and in each mental illness there are number of complexities involved like social problems, defect in any part of the brain etc.Psychologists, psychiatrists, doctors and sociologists, who so ever are dealing with the issue of Mental illness are contestants to this issue and advocates their own perceptions like Psychiatrists consider mental illness as a physical state of debilitation and look at it from the social angle, whereas doctors dictates it as a faulty or malfunctioning parts of the brain, such as infections, genetic defects and chemical imbalances within the individual, and neglects the wider social picture which is an ingredient part of illness. How well does the idea of labeling explain what happens to someone who is diagnosed as mentally ill? When a person is diagnosed mentally ill, he or she is labeled., a doctor or practitioner can understand the intensity of his problem and can prescribe the best treatment for him. Thus labeling can be a boon in disguise. Naturally if doctor labeled a person as â€Å"mentally disable†, that means he is considering the symptoms that a person is showing which is typical of mental disorder and can delve upon the problem and chart out the solutions.Critically review the evidence that there is an association between mental health and socio-economic inequality. No doubt there is a deep association between Mental Health and socio economic inequality. Socio economic inequalities lead to high psychiatric morbidity, disability, depression, Schizophrenia.   Studies by the World Psychologist, 2005 October; 4(3): 181–185 on 10,108 adults aged 16-65 resident in private households in the UK reveal that people who had no access to a car had an odds ratio for neurotic disorder of 1.4 (95% CI 1.1-1.7), compared with those who had access to two or more cars. People who rented their homes were also at increased risk of depression (1.3 [1.1-1.5]). These Income inequalities in the western market economies last 20 years had adverse consequences on the mental health of the people. Basically, the inferiority complex is a basic root and cause of this severe problem.Discuss how a family might affect and be affected by one of its members having a psychiatric diagnosis mental illness.Families of the patients suffering from severe psychotic symptoms often suffer from heavy emotional and social strains.   Many households may accept the patients, but the social rejections that are followed can cause serious consequences on the whole family. They can lead to strains of mental illness on a marriage life may also be very devasta ting. The divource rate is high among people who have depression or bipolar disorder. How might consultation be used to improve the sensitivity of mental health services to different needs?Consultation is a very important means of service delivery for mentally ill child and adolescents.   Consultation can be provided in number of ways: group or individual; fixed session or on demand; clinical-based or area office-based. For psychiatrists, the consultancy service is a very valuable experience. Trainees develop an awareness of the difficulties facing social work staff in difficult cases. The social work team also gains considerable benefit from an informal consultation service, which can improve their skills in further understanding the patient problems.   Through consultation, social workers can go into the depth of the causes of the problems of mentally ill within the family setting. Many people who have mental health problems are socially isolate. What can be done to provide them with informal support and friendship if they want this? The stigma that is attached to the mentally ill patients leads them to be isolated from the Society. Lot can be done for mentally ill patients. They can be, as suggested by World Health Organization (WHO), http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs218/en/ï‚ ·Ã‚  Ã‚   Openly discussing about the problem of mental illness in the community.ï‚ ·Ã‚  Ã‚   Providing accurate information on the causes, prevalence, course and effects of mental illnessï‚ ·Ã‚   Countering the negative stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding mental illness;ï‚ ·Ã‚   Providing support and treatment services that enable persons suffering from a mental illness to participate fully in all aspects of community life.ï‚ ·Ã‚   Ensuring the existence of legislation to reduce discrimination in the workplace. What are the particular challenges of resettling long-stay mental patients in the community, and what kinds of resource are needed to support them there?1. Hard to place psychiatric patient due to behavioral/management problems.2. Difficulty placing patient into the community due to lack of financial resources.3. How do we take care of the geriatric patient with a psychiatric disorder who becomes combative/disruptive that he is not allowed to remain in secure environments due to the high risk of harm to other patients?RESOURCES NEEDED TO SUPPORT THEM1. First fix the behavioral problems and poor compliance.2. The Training centers, employment programs, volunteer options and local clubs should all be part of the life plan of these people.3. Encourage realistic consideration of work and practical steps in preparation for reintegration, such as enrolment at a day programme.4. Involve them in any Meaningful occupation such as volunteer work etc. What are the rewards and stresses of work in mental health services? What measures might employing organisations take to reduce the effects of stress on staff and improve their job satis faction? The biggest reward for the people who are engaged in the mental health services is naturally the one when patient is recovered from mental illness. Besides getting mental satisfaction, they are also reward by the government for their meticulous services like â€Å"Award for Excellence in Community Mental Health Services†, 2006 Public Citizen of the Year award. Thus Government does appreciate these noble souls who are engaged in community welfare programs.HOW THE EMPLOYING ORGANIZATIONS REDUCE THE STRESS OF STAFF:They can reduce the stress of staff by:Effective management structureClear purpose & goals Functionally defined roles Team support Making appropriate plans for stress management Proper management of workload Balanced lifestyle Discuss the view that madness can be a valuable experience if only its value is recognized.Never consider the person who is mad as incompetent, as what he can provide to the Society, no able person can provide. For eg. If a person is di sillusioned with the society apathetic attitude, so in his madness he will keep on reflecting and mentioning about what’s wrong in the Society but we ignore his talks, but if we clearly ponder on his talks,   we will realize what role he is playing in giving the best to the Society which no body will ever intend to give.

Case Study 1 West Florida Regional Hospital Essay Example

Case Study 1 West Florida Regional Hospital Essay Example Case Study 1 West Florida Regional Hospital Essay Case Study 1 West Florida Regional Hospital Essay Case Study 1 Keiser University Dr. Marsha Lawrence HSM691 (Quality Management in Health Care) December 9, 2013 Introduction Regional Hospital West Florida Regional Medical Center (WFRMC) located on the north side of Pensacola, Florida competed strongly with sacred heart and Baptist hospitals for patients. WFRMCs CEO John Kausch was an active member of the Total Quality Council of the Pensacola Area Chamber of Commerce (PATQC) (McLaughlin, C. P. , Johnson, J. K. , Sollecito, 2012).. PATQCs vision was to develop the Pensacola, Florida area into a total quality community by promoting productivity, quality and economic evelopments in all area organizations both public and private (McLaughlin, et, al. , 2012). John Kauschs good management skills initiated the Control Quality Improvement for WFRMC to understand and adapt the external environment, empower clinicians and managers to analyze and improve process, adapt a norm that customer preferences are important determinants in quality which includes both patients and providers in the process, development of multidisciplinary approach that exceeds beyond conventional departmental and professional lines, adopting a plan for ongoing change and adaptation, setting up mechanisms for mplementation and organizational learning, and providing motivation data-based cooperation to process analysis and change (Sollecito, W. A. Johnson, J. K. , 2013). West Florida Regional Medical Center reflected PATQCs strategic impetus by defining several multifunctional teams sphered by core leadership (McLaughlin, et. al. , 2012). In addition, WFRMC identified customers and their expectations, determined training needs for all staff and identified all department opportunities (McLaughlin, et. al. , 2012). Basics The total Quality Management (TQM) program at WFRMC had its strengths and weaknesses. The weaknesses of the TQM program were the range of acceptability throughout the organization and a lack of computerization which led to a lack of information flow and costly errors (McLaughlin, et. al. , 2012). Trying to get the leadership motivated with adapting to TQM was a challenge in the beginning. The enthusiasm of top leaders has caused the TQM process to become effective. Although Health care has a complex adaptive system, leadership is crucial in implementing an improvement system (Sollecito Johnson, 2013). The strengths of the TQM process were the support of the chamber of commerce, implementation of a uality improvement plan, adapting a successful way to measure improvement and development of cost effective techniques (McLaughlin, et. al. , 2012). Corporate headquarters was totally involved in the TQM program with the CEO John Kausch as an active member of the Total Quality Council of the Pensacola, Area Chamber of Commerce (McLaughlin, et. al. , 2012) In any continuous quality improvement effort, measurement is the key element (Sollecito, Johnson, 2013). Measurement and statistical analysis are used to assess the impact of an improvement effort (Sollecito Johnson, 2013). To Measure the impact of the program, the hospital utilized a departmental quality improvement assessment with a scoring matrix for self- assessment (McLaughlin, et. al. , 2012) . The scoring matrix consisted of five category ratings which each department head had to complete. Univer4sal Charting and Resource Utilization were also used for measurement (McLaughlin, et. al. , 2012). Implementation To support the tactical programs within the hospital, formed a task force in quality improvement to serve as program support, monitor process and provide education nd training (McLaughlin, et. al. , 2012). In addition, a patient comment card system was used as a pilot and to evaluate policies and guidelines regarding forming multifunctional teams (McLaughlin, et. al. , 2012). The hospital used a computer system medication administration record (MAR) for documentation of the IV usage, universal charting to increase timelines and chart availability, a package price for labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum, and created a pharmacy and therapeutics committee to change the listing of antibiotic doses as tools to support tactical rograms within the hospital (McLaughlin, et. al. , 2012). The next step for John Kausch in dealing with continuous improvement would be the use of quality improvement tools to show the root cause of problems (Sollecito Johnson, 2013). Six Sigma is a CQI tool used in statistics to measure variations, identify and remove errors and minimize variability in processes (Sollecito Johnson, 2013). Application For West Florida Regional Medical Center to introduce an internal medicine residency program it is crucial that the clinical purpose of the residency program be identified ecause this defines the components of the microsystem (Mohr, J. , Batalden, P. , Barach, P. , 2004). WFRMC has to understand the dynamics of effective organizational different organizations (Sollecito Johnson, 2013). Since John Kausch already serve on the PATQC his next step would be forming relationships in the community to work together to achieve the residency program. There needs to be integration of information and technology included in work flows, staff focus to assess safety culture, education and training and interdependence of care teams to identify errors Sollecito Johnson, 2013). Tess of the dUrbervilles Review

'Tess of the d'Urbervilles' Review Originally serialized in the newspaper The Graphic, Thomas Hardys Tess of the dUrbervilles was first published as a book in 1891. This work was Hardys second-to-the-last novel, Jude the Obscure being his final one, and both are considered among the best works of the 19th century. Set in rural England, the novel tells the story of a poor girl, Tess Durbeyfield, who is sent by her parents to a supposedly noble family in the hope of finding a fortune and a gentleman for a husband. The young girl is instead seduced and meets her doom. Story Structure The novel is divided into seven sections, titled as phases. While it may seem usual to many readers, critics have discussed the significance of this term in relation to the progress of the plot and its moral implications. Various phases of the novel have been named according to various life phases of Hardys heroine: The Maiden, Maiden No More, and so on to the final phase, Fulfillment. Tess of the dUrberville is essentially a third-person narrative, but most of the events (all significant events, in fact) are seen through the eyes of Tess. The order of these events follows a simple chronological sequence, a quality that augments the ambiance of a simple rural life. Where we see Hardys real mastery is the difference in the language of people from the social classes (e.g. the Clares in contrast with the farm workers). Hardy also sometimes speaks directly to the readers to accentuating the effect of select events. Tess is helpless against and mostly submissive to, those around her. But, she suffers not only because of the seducer who destroys her but also because her beloved does not save her. Despite her suffering and weakness in the face of her suffering, she demonstrates long-suffering patience and endurance. Tess takes pleasure in toiling on the dairy farms, and she seems almost invincible to the trials of life. Given her enduring strength through all of her troubles, in some sense, the only appropriate ending was her death on the gallows. Her story became the ultimate tragedy. The Victorians In Tess of the dUrberville, Thomas Hardy targets the Victorian values of nobility right from the title of his novel. In contrast to the safe and innocent Tess Durbeyfield, Tess dUrbervilles is never at peace, even though she has been sent to become a dUrbervilles in the hopes of finding a fortune. The seeds of tragedy are sown when Tesss father, Jack, is told by a parson that he is the descendant of a family of knights. Hardy comments upon the hypocritical standards in masculine concepts of purity. Angel Clares forsakes his wife, Tess, in a classic instance of the rift between belief and practice. Given Angels religious background and his allegedly humanistic views, his indifference to Tess produces a striking contrast of character with Tess who persists in her love - against all odds. In Tess of the dUrbervilles, Thomas Hardy has directly satirized nature. In the third chapter of Phase the First, for example, he targets both nature and its exaltation by poets and philosophers: whence the poet whose philosophy is in these days deemed as profound and trustworthy... gets his authority for speaking of Natures holy plan. In the fifth chapter of the same phase, Hardy ironically comments on Natures role in guiding humans. Nature does not often say See! to her poor creature at a time when seeing could lead to happy doing; or reply Here to a bodys cry of Where? till the hide-and-seek has become an irksome, outworn game. Themes and Issues Tess of the dUrbervilles is rich in its involvement with several themes and issues, and there are many quotes from the book that synthesize these themes. Like most other Hardy novels, rural life is a prominent issue in the story. The hardships and drudgery of rustic lifestyle are explored fully through the travel and work experiences of Tess. Religious orthodoxy and social values are questioned in the novel. The issue of fate versus freedom of action is another important aspect of Tess of the dUrbervilles. While the main storyline may sound fatalistic, Hardy does not miss the opportunity to point out that the darkest of tragedies could be prevented by human action and consideration: Humanity.

Willa Cather's short story Paul's Case Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Willa Cather's short story Paul's Case - Essay Example His work as an usher takes him away from his drab surroundings and into another world where the music reveals the "potent spirit within him". Paul's world is built upon untruths. Paul does not care to join in the world of music and drama; he is satisfied just to live vicariously through its proximity. Paul feasts off the efforts of others. For Paul the whole world is all lies, and the theater is one more of Paul's illusions. For Paul it was easy and necessary for overcoming the difficult task of effort. The theater is not only his escape from school, but also from Cordelia Street. Cordelia Street is the symbol of the "colorless mass of everyday existence". Paul can not subscribe to the middle class and could never be a clerk. He would never become one of the "rivets in the machine" that his father had. Paul wanted to be at the top "though he had no mind for the cash-boy stage". Paul needs more. Paul immerses himself in the drama of the theater with fanatical tales of his exaggerated importance. Fearing that Paul had wandered too far from the center of normality, his father demands that he be put to work. Alienated from school by the strict teachers, from home by his father's dismal existence and banished from the theater Paul creates a new illusion.

Portland Cement Mortar Cubes Lab Report Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Portland Cement Mortar Cubes - Lab Report Example During the experiment, the temperature of air in the surrounding of the mixing slab, base plates, mixing bowl and the dry material was maintained between. The temperature of the mixing water, room and water in the storage tank were also kept at . The humidity was also maintained at 50%. The specimen were then molded and after molding stored in the moist room with their upper surfaces exposed to the air but protected from the dripping water. After one day, the first specimen was broken into two and its compressive strength recorded. The other specimens were inserted in saturated lime water and then removed during the third day to measure its compressive strength. The remaining specimen was broken into two and tested on the seventh day in the testing machine by applying loads of between 900 and 1800 N/s. The results for compressive strength of Type I cement were close to the standard ones as per ASTM C 150 (Table 3: Standard physical requirements). However, the results of Type III cement differ from the standard results. This shows that type III cement does do have the desired air content unless it is proven otherwise using the fineness model. The experiment was conducted with the highest level of accuracy possible. Errors were expected since the temperature and humidity in the laboratory were not constant. Also, in the preparation of mortar, the ratios were estimated to the nearest decimal point and thus resulted to the deviations for Type I cement. Type III cement deviations for strength show that it does not comply with the ASTM C 150. The experiment should be conducted under constant
